Today, across the entire nation, Bahamians proudly raised their tricolored symbol of democracy, independence, and unity! As we journey toward 51 years of Independence, today's Flag Raising Ceremony marks a poignant moment for reflection on our rich history and the enduring journey to independence in 1973.
The ceremony in Grand Bahama today at the Harold DeGregory building was graced by the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including the Honourable Ginger M. Moxey, M.P., Minister for Grand Bahama; the Honourable Michael Pintard, M.P., Leader of the Opposition; Kingsley Smith, M.P., Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry for Grand Bahama; and Senators James Turner and Kirkland Russell. Alongside them were many other proud Bahamians, gathered to celebrate this significant occasion.
Minister Moxey, in her address, emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, “As we celebrate another year of independence, we remember the leaders, the fight, and the triumphs that paved the way for our rights. Today, we proudly wave the Bahamian flag as a symbol of honor, resilience, and national pride.”
The flag stands tall as a testament to the unity and strength of our diverse communities, reaffirming our commitment to progress and prosperity for all Bahamians. This ceremony not only honors our past but also inspires a future filled with hope and promise.
The event featured a range of activities that showcased our cultural heritage, including musical performances by the Grand Bahama Northern District Police Pop Band and a mesmerizing cultural dance by the Bahamas Dance Theatre. The heartfelt invocation by Rev'd Kenneth Lewis, President of the Grand Bahama Christian Council, and the closing prayer by Bishop Dr. Sidney McIntosh, J.P., added a profound spiritual dimension to the celebration.
We are reminded today of the enduring spirit of our nation and the collective effort that continues to drive us forward. As the flag was raised, we reflected on our shared heritage and renewed our commitment to the mantra "One People united in love, and service."
